My first experience with dragon boat racing was during Grade 11 in high school, where we had a throw-together team that only practiced four or five times in the boat before racing at Centre Island. During first-year university, I tried out for my college's dragon boat team, the University College Water Dragons. To my utter surprise, I made the team that year, and have returned every year - 2006 will mark my fourth season with UC. I have been fortunate to join a highly competitive team that turned itself into a two-time University Cup champion and the top University-level team in Eastern Canada. Our team has represented Canada at the International College Dragon Boat Race Festival in Tianjin, China (2004, 2005), though I did not participate because of school conflicts.
